Hit 200 species on my life list in Austin and 41 of them were just grasses
I keep a running list of every plant I can ID on my own and I finally hit 200 last Saturday, standing in a greenbelt outside Austin. The surprise was pulling up my spreadsheet and seeing 41 of them were grasses. I'd been walking past them for 3 years and calling them all "some kind of grass." Once I learned the ligule and how the seed head sits, they started splitting apart into totally different plants. It took me one field guide and about 6 hours of squinting at a hand lens to get most of them. Now I can't unsee the difference between rescuegrass and little barley on my own lawn. Anyone else get blindsided by a whole plant family like that, and which one got you?
