DAE figure out that bottom watering finally saved my ferns after months of crispy tips?
My Boston ferns kept getting brown, crunchy tips no matter how much I watered them from the top, and I lost two of them over the winter in my Chicago apartment. A guy at the plant swap in Logan Square told me to just set the pots in a tub of water for 20 minutes instead, so I tried it in April. Three months later the new fronds are green all the way to the ends and I have not lost a single leaf. Has anyone else had this work, or does it depend on the plant?
set the pots in a tub of water for 20 minutes" is doing a lot of work here for a plant that just got moved to a new spot for spring. Ferns in Chicago apartments usually crisp up because the air is bone dry from heating, not because of how you pour the water. April is also when they naturally push new growth after a rough winter, so you would probably see green fronds either way. Two dead ferns is a loss, but three months is not really enough time to say bottom watering is the fix. I have done both and the tips still brown out by February no matter what.
