Compared store-bought soil to a custom mix for my carnivorous plants last spring

The bag of peat moss from Home Depot nearly killed my Venus flytraps, but mixing my own with distilled water and perlite made them explode in growth. Has anyone else had better luck building your own substrate instead of buying pre-made?

Explode in growth" is exactly what happened with my Nepenthes after I ditched the big box store mix. I used to think pre-made was fine, but a few close calls with cheap peat totally changed my mind.

Got my own horror story with store bought soil. I grabbed a bag of "premium" cactus mix once and it had these little white pellets that looked like perlite but turned out to be slow release fertilizer. Cooked my poor sarracenia roots in like a week. Had to dig them all out and rinse everything. Now I just mix my own peat with sand from the hardware store and rinse it a bunch first. My sundews seem way happier too, they were always getting weird spots before.
