Update: a book conservator in Portland talked me out of using PVA on a 1930s journal and I'm still thinking about it
I met her at a repair workshop two weeks ago and when I mentioned I seal every spine I fix with PVA, she asked if I'd ever tried wheat starch paste on older paper. She pulled out a 1932 journal she'd rebound and the spine moved like fabric instead of cracking when you opened it. How do you all decide when a repair calls for paste versus PVA, or do you just match whatever the original binding used?

Wheat starch all day for anything pre 1950s. PVA turns old paper into a rock and you lose that flex she showed you. Match the age of the book, not the binding.
