Tried case binding with PVA from a big box store and the spine cracked on the second open
I finished a 300 page rebind of an old atlas on Tuesday and used PVA I picked up at a hardware store in Fresno because my usual supplier was out. Two days later the hinge split right down the middle, all the pages are still holding but the cover is basically flopping loose now. Part of me thinks I should just stick with the same glue and press harder next time, but the other part says cheap adhesive is never worth the gamble. Does anyone here have a PVA they trust for case binding, or am I wrong to blame the glue?

Oh man, I feel this in my soul. I once tried to rebind a paperback with glue I found in my dad's garage and it fell apart before I even finished the next day, so at least you got two whole days out of yours. Honestly though, hardware store PVA is usually meant for wood, not paper, and the stuff that works for bookbinding has more give to it so it doesn't go brittle and crack. I'd say blame the glue on this one, not your pressing. Maybe it's just me but cheap glue is one of those things where you pay twice, once at the store and once when you redo the whole book.
