Serious question, I used to hate doing headbands by hand but now I love it.

For years I'd just use pre-made cloth strips because it was faster, but they never looked quite right on my nicer projects. Last fall I took a workshop in Seattle where the instructor made us sew a headband from scratch using linen thread, and it totally clicked. The control you get is way better, and now I won't go back. Has anyone else switched from pre-made to making their own headbands and noticed a big difference?

That bit about them looking sad on books is exactly what I noticed too, @michael519. I had a stack of old paperbacks where the pre-made headbands just peeled off after a few years, leaving this weird glue residue. My friend in Portland got me into using old silk ties from thrift stores, cutting them into strips and stitching them down with cotton thread. You get this worn-in look that matches vintage books way better than anything store-bought.

Pre-made headbands always looked a bit sad on my books. Now I'm a total convert, even if it takes forever.

My grandma taught me to sew them from old ribbons, which was way more fun.
