Said I'd never use wheat paste on leather, then tried it on a Cambridge Bible reback
A binder at the guild meet in Salem kept telling me to try wheat paste instead of PVA on a leather reback, and I blew him off for probably 3 months. Finally tried it on a Cambridge Bible with a cracked spine last week, mixed it thin, and the paste gave me way more working time to line up the grain before it grabbed. The hinge set clean with no ridges, and I could lift and reset a corner twice without tearing the leather. PVA would have grabbed in 20 seconds and left me fighting it. So now I'm curious, what ratio are you all mixing for thin leather, and does anyone add a little something to keep it from going sour in the pot?
