Rushed a Coptic stitch on a gift journal and the whole spine pulled loose

Finished a 160 page journal for my sister's birthday on a Friday night and skipped the second round of waxing the linen thread to save maybe 20 minutes. By Saturday morning the whole block had shifted and the first signature was already separating from the cover. Do you all double wax no matter what, or is there a faster thread setup I'm missing?
