My 71 year old neighbor in Dayton handed me a tin of wheat paste and I finally quit fighting with PVA on my spines
I always reached for PVA out of habit until Walt next door watched me glue up a spine back in March and said his father bound books with nothing but flour and water during the war. I mixed up a small batch of his recipe, one part flour to four parts water with a pinch of salt, and the hinge flexibility on my next three case bindings was a whole different thing. It dries slower so you can work it into the joint without panic, but it also means weighting the book overnight. Has anyone else made the switch for spines, and do you add anything to keep the paste from going sour in the jar?
