My $12 corner punch proved useless after 5 test tries, now I'm asking about alternatives
I was flattening a hinge crease on a rebind last Saturday and used my new bone folder like I saw in a YouTube video, pressing hard along the fold line. Within like 5 minutes I heard that sickening crackle and realized I'd crushed the paper fibers right at the joint, leaving a permanent white stress line on the cover board. Turns out the trick is to score with the folder almost flat, barely any pressure, then let the moisture in the glue do the work. I found this out digging through an old 1980s bindery manual at the library downtown, which said most spine damage from hand tools comes from people treating folders like putty knives. Who knew a tool that costs less than a coffee could undo hours of sewing and casing? Has anyone else ruined a project with a supposedly simple tool, and do you have a go-to angle or pressure trick that works for you?
