Honestly, I think the 'perfect' grain direction rule for book cloth is overrated
Ngl, I bound a whole run of poetry books with the grain running the wrong way because the pattern looked better, and after two years in a Seattle library, they're holding up fine. Has anyone else tried this and had a different result?

Would you risk it with a humid climate or heavy use though?

But is it REALLY that big of a deal? I feel like @abbyr96 has a point about modern glue. People build stuff all the time that holds up fine.

Remember my buddy's deck? The whole thing warped and split after one wet summer, even with "good" glue.

People forget how much modern glue matters. The old rules came from animal based adhesives that shrank a lot. A good PVA can handle some cross grain stress without failing.
