Got cocky with my glue pot at the Kalamazoo book fair and ruined a Bible repair
I was at the Kalamazoo book fair last month, showing off a Bible repair to a small crowd, and I got careless with my glue pot because I was talking instead of watching the temp. The hide glue hit 170F while I was mid story, and it went on so thin and hot that it soaked straight through the spine lining and stained the text block edge. I had to stop in front of everyone, peel the whole thing apart, and redo the lining from scratch, and the owner was nice about it but I felt sick. Since then I keep a cheap candy thermometer clipped to the pot and I check it every 10 minutes, no exceptions. Has anyone else had a glue batch sneak up on them when you were distracted?
