Dutch glue in a spray bottle made my last rebind peel off in sheets

I figured a quick spray adhesive would save time on a textblock for a customer's 1920s novel. Turned out the moisture warped the spine and the pages started separating after three days. Has anyone else had adhesive reactions like this with older paper?

I heard some old paper has a chemical coating that rejects modern adhesives like that spray stuff you mentioned.

Right, some older papers had a sizing or coating made from gelatin or animal glue that just doesn't bond with modern acrylic sprays. That spray will sit on top and peel right off instead of soaking in and sticking.

Oh COME ON, lots of people use spray adhesive on old books just fine. Your technique was probably off or you used way too much glue, that's all.
