Wasted $45 on that subscription book box and got three duds in a row

I signed up for a popular monthly book subscription thinking I'd discover new authors. Instead I got two romance novels and a self-help book I'll never read. Has anyone else had better luck with these things or is it all marketing?

Bought a mystery book box for six months straight and got one decent thriller out of the whole thing. The rest were half-baked fantasy novels with terrible covers and writing that felt like a first draft. I kept hoping it'd get better but by month four I was just annoyed. The marketing makes it sound like you'll get some hidden gem but it's really just leftover stock nobody bought. I cancelled and bought two books I actually wanted for less than the subscription cost. Feels like a scam that preys on people who want to support smaller authors.

Six months? Man, you've got more patience than me, I bailed on my snack box after month two when I got a bag of "artisanal" chips that tasted like cardboard and regret.
