Warning: I picked a book for my club that I thought was a sure thing

I chose a popular thriller for our group in Austin, expecting a fun debate about the plot twist. Instead, the whole meeting turned into a fight about whether the main character was even likable, and we barely talked about the story. Has your club ever gotten totally stuck on a character detail and missed the bigger book?

Remember reading how some book clubs get stuck on a single point. It happens when a character feels too real and people bring their own stuff to it. Maybe your group just needed to get that out first.

Our club got past that by setting a five minute timer for venting before diving into the book.

That point about characters feeling too real is so true. We had a whole meeting derailed because someone saw their own mom in a character's flaws. Setting aside that vent time lets people get that personal stuff out so they can actually talk about the book's story.
