Vent: Our book club's fight over symbolism wasted a whole meeting
I used to get so annoyed when members would dig deep into symbols I thought were obvious. Last month, we spent an hour arguing if the green light in that classic novel meant hope or envy. I realized I was shutting down other views just because they didn't match mine. Now I try to listen first and see how their reading adds to the story. It's made our talks richer, even if we still disagree. I guess I learned that debates aren't about winning but understanding. Still, it bugs me when people don't back up their points with text.

Honestly, I used to brush off needing proof from the book... but seeing how it cuts through the noise changed my whole view.

@sam336, I just ask them to show me the page. If they can't back it up, their point falls flat. We always cite passages to keep debates grounded. Why discuss symbols without the text to support it?
