Used to only read thrillers but after my book club picked Pachinko I realized I was missing out on so much more.

The way that book wove family history through generations across two cultures made me stop and think for days, so now I grab a literary fiction pick every third read to keep things fresh, anyone else find a genre they ignored for years that clicked?

My Aunt Ruth used to only read cookbooks and those little self help pamphlets they hand out at church, never fiction at all. Then she picked up Memoirs of a Geisha at a yard sale for a quarter and called me three days later saying she finally understood what all the fuss was about with storytelling. Now she reads two novels a month and keeps a little journal of her thoughts on each one. It is funny how a single book can break open a door you did not even know was closed.
