TIL our park district book club might disband over a classic novel's ending

We read 'To Kill a Mockingbird' for this month's pick. The debate over Atticus Finch's character turned into a big argument. Some members are now refusing to come back, and I'm worried the club will fall apart. How do you handle strong opinions in your book clubs?

In my old book club, we once spent a whole meeting arguing about 'The Great Gatsby'. People got so mad about whether Gatsby was a hero or a fool that two members almost left. We decided to have a follow-up chat where everyone could cool down and share their views without yelling. It actually made our club stronger because we learned to listen better, even when we disagree. Sometimes those big fights show how much people care about the books!

Two people almost quit over Gatsby? That's pretty extreme for a book club. Debates can get heated, but walking out is serious business. My group once yelled for an hour about 'Catcher in the Rye', but we all stayed friends. Turning that into a lesson on listening is smart.

Honestly the fights get so hot because books like that hold up a mirror to our own stuff. Tbh when someone hates a character you love, it can feel like a personal attack on your choices. Ngl that's why walking out happens, it stops being about the book at all.
