That reading list debate at our May meetup still bothers me

I was at the Elm Street library last Tuesday for our monthly book club. We spent 45 minutes arguing about whether to pick a classic or a recent bestseller for next month. Sarah kept saying we should only read books that are "culturally important" which basically meant stuff written before 1950. Mike wanted nothing but thrillers from the last three years. I just sat there thinking why can't we mix it up. The whole thing felt like a fight over who gets to decide what counts as good reading. Has anyone else had their club split like this over genre choices

Does the hat also decide if you'll spend the next meetup debating the hat's inherent bias toward paper vs. digital slips?

Forty five minutes on picking a book? That's some serious overthinking for a bunch of people who probably just want to read something decent. Look, just put both options in a hat and pull one out. You'll read the other one next time anyway.
