That Book Club pick that cost me $35 and 8 hours of my life
I joined a new book club last month and the first pick was this self-published novel called The Shadow Code. Cost me $35 on Amazon because the paperback was the only option. I forced myself through 500 pages of awful writing and plot holes you could drive a truck through. Took me like 8 hours over 2 weeks to finish it. The discussion night was just everyone complaining about how bad it was for an hour. Has anyone else gotten stuck with a book club selection that was a total dud and a money pit?

Oof, that stinks. Next time just bail after 50 pages and save the cash.

Nah I disagree, sticking it out can be worth it sometimes. Some books really drag in the middle but then the last third pulls everything together and changes your whole view of the story. If I bailed on every slow book I'd have missed some of my favorites.
