So we're debating this novel's ending, and out of nowhere, a member compares it to their divorce. Everyone froze. How do you even follow that?

God yes, that happens all the time. I was in a book club where we read this romance with an open ending, and my friend Steve just went off about how it felt exactly like when his long-term girlfriend left without a real explanation. He started comparing story beats to their last fight. It got so real we just sat there in silence for a full minute. You never know what's going to hit a nerve for people.

Remember at the movies when Mark just froze up? We were watching this war film, and there was a scene with a soldier writing a letter home. Mark later said it was exactly like the last letter his brother sent before he went missing.
