Rant: That one guy at my book club who argued the chair was the main character for 45 minutes
Last month at our downtown library book club, we were discussing The House in the Cerulean Sea and this dude named Mark would not let go of his take that the armchair in the office was the real protagonist. He said it represented emotional stability and the whole group just sat there in silence for like 30 seconds. I tried to move things along by asking about Linus' character growth but he cut me off and started talking about fabric patterns and upholstery symbolism. Our moderator Deb eventually had to set a 2 minute timer for him to finish his argument. I get that people have hot takes but has anyone else had a book club moment where one person just derails everything with a super weird theory?

Gotta side with Mark on this one. The chair was clearly a stabilizing force in an otherwise chaotic narrative environment. Linus wouldn't have grown without that piece of furniture grounding his emotional journey. Plus, the upholstery pattern was described three separate times which is two more times than any other object got mentioned. Deb should have let him finish without the timer.

Oh the fabric patterns thing really got me because he's not entirely wrong but 45 minutes is insane. I mean the chair is literally called "the armchair" like it's a character and it does show up at key moments when Linus needs to think. But if we're being real about it, the chair is basically a symbol for the comfort Linus finds in routine and rules before he starts to question everything. Mark should have just said that and moved on instead of going on about the velveteen texture like Deb was gonna give him a book club award for deep analysis.
