Rant: Our group spent 45 minutes arguing if the main character in 'The Silent Shore' was a hero or just selfish.

I kept thinking about a line from chapter 7 where she tells her brother 'I'm not staying for you,' which everyone else ignored because they were too busy calling her brave.

Ugh, that line is the whole point. Guess I'd have been the one arguing for 45 minutes too.

That line always felt like a cheap trick to me, honestly.

you ever have that one friend who takes everything way too literally? my buddy mark did that with this movie. we watched it together and when that line hit he just stopped the whole thing, went on a whole rant about how the character had no reason to say that, it totally broke immersion for him. i was just sitting there like "dude its a movie about a guy who fights ghosts for a living, just roll with it." but he was dead serious, spent like 20 minutes explaining why it was bad writing. we almost never brought up movies with him again after that night.
