Rant: Our book club meeting turned into a silent standoff over character morals

Honestly, we were discussing that crime novel where the main witness lies to protect their family. Tbh, one side said it was justified loyalty, the other called it selfish and illegal. Ngl, the room got so tense that for like five minutes, nobody spoke, just stared at their coffee. Ever had a debate freeze up like that?

A five-minute silence over book club morals? That's some next-level tension. In my experience, that's when you know people are too busy judging each other to speak. Take this with a grain of salt, but I've seen less drama at family reunions. Maybe next time pick a book where the main conflict is about what to have for breakfast.

Yeah, we switched to coffee shop meetings and that helped.

Totally agree! Our book club moved to a library study room and it cut the awkward silences in half. Something about a neutral spot just lets people relax and actually talk about the book.
