Picked up two mystery novels for book club and one was clearly the winner
I read 'The Silent Patient' and 'The Maid' back to back for our group's thriller month, and the pacing difference was huge. 'The Silent Patient' kept me guessing until the final chapters while 'The Maid' felt predictable by page 100. Has anyone else found that slow-burn mysteries work way better for discussion than ones that give away the twist too early?

Stop acting like reading a mystery novel is some kind of mental workout. You picked up two books for a book club, not a college course. If a book loses you by page 100, just put it down and move on. Overthinking which one is "better" for discussion just seems like a waste of energy. The Maid wasn't trying to be a puzzlebox, it was just a fun story. Not everything needs to be a guessing game where you feel smart at the end. Maybe just pick the one you liked more and stop worrying about what works best for a group chat.

Oh, I've been there! In my experience, the books that make you work a little harder to figure things out always spark the best conversations.
