Our club split 7 to 5 over a 40 page novella and I finally just started making one page cheat sheets
Last month my book club in Austin picked a 40 page novella and half the group showed up having only skimmed it, which turned a 90 minute talk into a fight about the ending for 45 minutes. I started writing a single page cheat sheet before each meeting with the characters, a short plot recap, and three talk points, and now people actually finish the reading because it feels less like homework. Two members told me the sheet was the only reason they came back after the novella mess. The catch is I now spend about an hour on it and I'm the only one making them, so I'm basically doing homework for grown ups. Does anyone else have a system that keeps the group on track without turning one person into the teacher?
