Our book club tore apart my favorite character pick last month
They said I was defending a flat archetype and pushed me to read the novel from the antagonist's angle instead. Has anyone else had their book club challenge their reading choices in a way that totally shifted how you saw the story?

Yeah, "the hero look kinda shallow" is exactly what got me too. Sometimes you gotta admit your favorite is just the flashy one, not the deep one.

Give it a try honestly because thats how I ended up totally flipping on a book I thought I hated. Had a group push me to read the villain's chapters again and I realized the author was way more clever than I gave them credit for. The antagonist had a whole different set of rules they were playing by and it made the hero look kinda shallow in comparison. Now I cant unsee the layers in that story and I actually respect the writing a lot more. It stings at first when people tear apart your favorite character but sometimes theyre onto something you just missed.
