Our book club had to pick between 'The Road' and a cozy mystery, and I pushed hard for the dark one

Last month, the vote came down to Cormac McCarthy's 'The Road' or a lighthearted whodunit set in a bakery. I argued for 'The Road' because I was tired of safe picks. We read it, and the discussion got really heated when Sarah said the bleakness was pointless. Honestly, it was the best debate we've had in a year. Anyone else have a club split over a super dark book versus a fun one?

@paige_martin that friend and his girlfriend should start a book club just for the two of them, it sounds like a real relationship test. Honestly the cozy mystery sounds like it would put me to sleep faster than a glass of warm milk. Our group is still side-eyeing each other over the "pointless bleakness" comment at last month's meeting.

Tbh it's like picking a movie, people want comfort or a challenge. The dark books force a real talk that fluffy ones just don't. That friction is where you actually get to know people.

My buddy had that exact fight with his girlfriend over a book.
