Our book club fell apart over a 5-star rating

I brought up this thriller for our monthly pick and it got a solid 5 stars from all 8 of us before the meeting. Then we actually sat down to talk about it and turns out half the group hated the ending. One lady said it ruined the whole book for her and another called it the best twist she has ever read. We spent the whole night going back and forth about whether a bad ending kills a good book. Has anyone else had a book club debate blow up over something that simple?

That kind of split is rough. Half loving and half hating a twist must have made for a long night. Ever had another book where the group was that divided on one thing?

Had a book club meeting where literally half of us were convinced the main character was dead for real and the other half swore it was a fake out. Four people nearly started screaming at each other lmao. We had to table the whole discussion until everyone read the next chapter just to calm down.
