My grandma asked why our club argues about endings so much, and her answer stuck with me
Last Sunday I called my grandma in Toledo to wish her happy birthday and she asked what my book club was fighting about this month. I told her we spent 45 minutes going back and forth over whether the ending of our pick was hopeful or just sad, and she laughed and said her club in the 80s never argued about endings at all. Back then they mostly compared the book to the movie and talked about whether the characters felt real, and nobody cared if you read the last chapter early. What got me was her saying the fun is in the disagreeing itself, not in getting everyone to agree on one meaning. My club keeps trying to land on one right answer every month like it's a test we can pass. Do your clubs dig into endings like ours, or do you keep it more loose like she did?
