My cousin insisted we skip the author's introduction for 'The Overstory' and it ruined the first meeting.

Skip the intro and the whole book is ruined? That seems a bit much. It's just a few pages at the start, not the whole story. You can probably catch up just fine.

Oh, that's a real shame. The introduction sets up the whole book's rhythm. I'd quietly go back and read it before the next meeting.

Page 7 of the first chapter sets up the whole pacing for the rest of the book. Skipping it means you miss how the author uses those short sentences to build tension. I had to reread it twice to catch all the little details.
