My book club spent 90 minutes on one metaphor and nobody cared

We got stuck debating what the lighthouse meant in chapter 4, so I pulled up the author's old interview and read one quote out loud, and suddenly the whole room shifted from arguing to asking why we even picked that book, has anyone else had a wild tangent derail the entire discussion for better or worse?
