I read somewhere that really extreme book club fights like this usually come down to people having different expectations going in. The twist basically forces you to pick a side on whether you wanted the story to be comforting or challenging. That comment about it revealing more about the reader than the book is spot on because you can tell a lot about someone by how they react to an ending that messes with their assumptions.
