I finally spoke up about the ending of 'Project Hail Mary' at our library group in Boise

Our whole club was split, with half calling it a perfect finish and the other half, including me, feeling the last chapter undercut the main character's choice, which led to a two hour debate that made me realize I need to prepare my points with actual page numbers next time, so how do you guys handle it when a book's ending just doesn't sit right with you?

Huh, @jake_martin16, but Rocky's first line is actually on page 97, not 100.

Yeah, needing page numbers for a debate like that is so real. When an ending bugs me, I go back and write down the exact lines that felt off, like the specific moment a character's decision seemed to contradict their earlier actions. Having those quotes in front of me stops the discussion from just being about feelings.

Oh man, a two hour fight over an ending? That's my kind of book club. I mean, I'd probably just start making stuff up if I didn't have my notes. Rubyreed has the right idea writing lines down, because otherwise you're just waving your hands around saying "it felt bad!" I got into it with my brother over a different book's ending last month. I was all "the guy spent the whole book being careful, then suddenly does the dumbest thing possible on page 300!" and he just kept saying "but it was exciting." Having the actual page to point to shuts that down fast.
