Found a used copy of 'The Goldfinch' with a whole argument in the margins
Picked it up at a library sale in Portland for fifty cents. Two different people went back and forth for pages about whether Boris was a good friend or just using Theo. One wrote 'he's a parasite!' and the other underlined it and wrote 'you missed the point, he's the only real connection Theo has.' Has anyone else found a book with a full debate already written inside?

That's not a debate, it's a book club.

Seriously, what's the big deal here? Calling it a book club just means people are actually reading and talking about stuff. That sounds way better than most online yelling matches. Maybe it's not a formal debate, but so what? At least they're having a real conversation. Getting worked up over the label seems pretty pointless.

Look, I've seen this happen before. Someone tries to have a serious talk about rules or definitions and people just say "who cares, we're talking." But then two weeks later, the whole thing falls apart because nobody agreed on what they were doing. If you want a book club, cool, call it that. If you want a debate, set some ground rules. Otherwise it's just a messy argument waiting to happen.
