Why does nobody talk about how tough it is to remove old boiler welds?
I was working on a restoration project last month and had to cut out some welds from the 70s. The metal was super hard, and my grinding wheels kept wearing out fast. It took me three days just to prep the area. Any tips on tools or techniques for this kind of job?

My buddy Steve tried grinding 80s-era boiler seams last fall. He ended up renting a plasma cutter but said the metal was so stubborn it still ate up a whole weekend.

Seriously? I've worked on old factory equipment and sometimes the problem isn't the metal. It's the years of scale and baked on grime that makes cutting a nightmare. That or the guy just had a dull blade on the cutter. You sure Steve knew what he was doing with that plasma setup?

Remember that Steve was dealing with 80s-era boiler metal, which can be super hard from heat cycling over decades. Plasma cutters need clean metal to work best, but even with grime, a good operator can adjust settings. Steve renting a plasma cutter shows he knew to use the right tool, so the metal itself was probably the real issue. I've seen similar cases where the metal type just won't cut easy, no matter how skilled you are!
