Warning: a young helper told me to stop grinding my tube welds so hard, and he might be right
I always believed a weld on a boiler tube had to look pretty before it got sent out, so I ran my grinder on every cap until it was smooth. Last Tuesday a 22 year old helper on our job in Gary told me I was thinning the wall and costing us time for no reason. He grabbed the caliper and showed me I had taken off almost 1/16 of an inch on one joint. I told him flat out that pretty welds get us callbacks and nobody ever got dinged for too clean a finish. He asked me if the inspector checks wall thickness or how shiny it looks, and I did not have a good answer. Now I am torn on where to draw the line between clean and overworked. How do you all decide when to stop grinding on a cap?
