Those $30 magnetic welding clamps are a scam, but so are the $300 ones

I burned 40 bucks on cheap magnetic clamps last month and they barely held 1/4 inch plate, then a journeyman let me try his high-end set and they slipped on the same joint. Is the middle ground real or are we all just paying for the brand sticker? What are you guys running for fit-up on overhead work?
