Shoutout to the vet who taught me a solid method for stopping weld warp
Was fixing a leaky seam on a small boiler and the sheet metal kept buckling no matter how careful I was. A guy on site said to space out tiny tack welds first, then fill in between, letting it cool between passes. Tried it and the panel stayed flat, no more leaks. Anyone got other hacks for thin gauge repair?

I read about peening welds on thin stuff to help stress relief, which seems like it would pair well with what @quinn_young said about letting the heat spread out more evenly.

Weird but it works, sometimes I'll actually pre-heat the whole panel with a torch set real low. Takes the shock out of it when you start adding your real weld heat. Lets the expansion happen more evenly.

Hey, ever hear about using wet rags around the weld zone? Saw a old timer drape them on the backside to pull heat away fast. Kinda makes you question why we overcomplicate things, huh?
