Shoutout to the old hand at the Gary, Indiana job site who made me re-do my tube sheet welds
Back in March I was on a boiler rebuild over in Gary, Indiana and I thought my tube sheet welds were solid. This old hand, maybe 30 years in the trade, walked by, looked at one for about ten seconds and asked if I'd checked my preheat temp. I hadn't, not really, just eyeballed it. He pulled out a temp stick and we were running about 80 degrees cold on the sheet. We let it soak up heat for another 20 minutes and the arc just laid in way smoother, night and day difference. Now I keep a temp stick in my chest pocket and check every joint before I strike an arc. What do you all use to verify preheat on a cold morning, temp stick or something else?
