Rant: a retired boilermaker in Gary told me to stop chasing every new rod on the market
Ran into a retired boilermaker named Walt at a supply shop in Gary, Indiana about 3 weeks ago while grabbing some 7018s, and he asked what rods I keep in the truck. I listed off like 6 different types I've bought over the past couple years trying to find the 'best' one. He laughed and said he ran nothing but 6010 and 7018 for 30 years and never lost a job over it. That hit me harder than it should have. I've spent probably $400 in the last 2 years on rods I used once or twice and shoved in the back of the truck. He pulled out this old leather rod bag that was darker than coffee and said the leather was 22 years old. I've been overthinking the gear side of this trade way too much when the old timers I know just ran their two rods and made it work. Anyone else got a guy like Walt who called them out on something dumb?
