My new torch gave out halfway through a header repair yesterday
Was out at a job site in Gary, Indiana fixing a crack in a 300 gallon tank. Got my new Smith torch lit, got maybe 4 inches into the weld and the gas just died. Turns out the O-ring on the hose fitting was dry rotted from sitting in my truck for 2 months. Had to drive 40 minutes back to the shop for a spare. Anyone else run into new gear failing right out of the gate?

Keep a couple spare O-rings in your truck like @jana_henderson52 said, but don't count on Smith sending freebies. Most of these companies blame the distributor or claim the part sat too long, so you're usually stuck eating the cost. Spare O-rings are cheap, so just grab a pack from the hardware store and save yourself the headache.

Oh man that is such a bummer! I just read a thread on another welding forum where a guy had the same problem with a new Victor setup. Some of the older welders there were saying the rubber seals on the newer gear are just not as good as the old ones. They said to keep some spare O-rings in your glove box for stuff like this. You think if you called Smith they would send you a free replacement set?
