I think the obsession with perfect bead appearance is silly. Had a trainee mess up a weld so bad it looked abstract art, and the client loved it.

Ha, abstract art is a great way to put it. Sometimes you just gotta focus on the strength of the weld and roll with it if the client is happy.

But if the weld looks like a mess, doesn't that say something about the overall job? Sure, strength is the main thing, but a clean finish shows care. Are we just making excuses for sloppy work now? When did "good enough" become the standard?
