Hit 500 hours on my welding machine and it felt weird

I was just cleaning up my shop last week and noticed my Miller had ticked over to 500 hours of arc time. That number caught me off guard because I started this trade fresh out of a 2-year program and didn't think I'd stick with it. 500 hours of actually burning rod and wire feels like a real milestone for me, not just some class project. Has anyone else hit a random hour count that made them stop and think about how far they've come?

I hit 600 hours on my Lincoln about two weeks back and it hit me the same way. I used to think welding was just a job, something to pay bills until I figured out what I actually wanted to do. But seeing that number made me realize I’ve stuck with it longer than anything else before, and I’ve gotten good enough that guys ask me for help on tricky joints.

Yeah but the thing nobody talks about is how those hours change your mindset too. @patriciaellis you said it hit you the same way and I think people miss that part. It's not just the skill stacking up, it's the way your brain starts seeing metal differently. Like you look at a rusty pipe and instead of seeing junk you see where the puddle would flow and how you'd weave it. That's the real milestone nobody warns you about.
