Had a stubborn flange on a 12-inch steam line in a plant in Toledo. Tried the old heat and quench three times with no luck.

Watched a guy in Gary use a cutting torch on a similar fitting. The whole section had to be replaced after that.

Man, that's rough but I've seen it happen too. People get desperate with a stuck fitting and think more heat is the answer. Ends up costing way more time and money when you wreck the whole piece. Just kills the job for the day, honestly.

Yeah, that torch trick is a last resort for a reason. You can easily ruin the integrity of the pipe metal right next to the joint. Saw a section warp so bad from uneven heat it wouldn't even take a new gasket. Sometimes you gotta walk away and get the big hydraulic wrench or even plan for a cut-out if it's that seized.
