Finally got my fit-up time down on those 24-inch flanges

Used to take me a full hour to get them tacked up square. Started using a simple laser level my buddy lent me, and now I'm done in under 20 minutes. Anyone have a better method for checking alignment on big pipe?

Try a cheap magnetic digital level next time.

That's a huge time save, going from an hour to 20 minutes is solid. Honestly for a tack weld, is perfect squareness that critical? I get it for the final weld but for just holding it, close is usually good enough. Paul117's digital level idea seems like overkill for a fit-up. You're already crushing it with the laser.

Hold up, you're saying that guy thinks squareness isn't that important for the tack weld? That's wild to me. I had a 20 inch flange pull a full half inch out of square on me once because I rushed the tacks. The whole spool ended up being garbage and I had to cut it out and start over. That waste cost me three hours and a whole set of new gaskets. A laser level is fine but that digital level idea from Paul117? I'd be more worried about the battery dying halfway through the job than saving a few minutes.
