Warning: I organized a game night with my regular group versus a random meetup crew

My usual four friends spent 45 minutes arguing about house rules for Catan before we even started, but the six strangers at the library meetup just picked a game and played. The difference was the random group actually wanted to play games, not just talk about them. Has anyone else noticed their 'hardcore' friends are the biggest obstacle to actually playing?

Totally get that. It's like the more you know about something, the more time you spend talking about the right way to do it instead of just doing it. Classic overthinking.

I mean sometimes you need to talk it out first though.

Wait, 45 minutes arguing about Catan house rules?! That's insane. I can't believe you sat through that, I would have packed up and left after 10 minutes honestly. Like, how do you even have that much to debate about Catan? It's not exactly a complex game with a million variations. The random group sounds way more fun, just grabbing a game and playing it like normal people. Tbh I think your friends are more interested in being 'gamers' than actually playing games, which is a real problem I see a lot. Ngl that would drive me crazy.
