Used to cherry-pick games based on theme alone until I played 6 rounds of a boring space opera last month
After that, I started checking playthrough videos and BGG weight ratings instead of just judging by the box art, and now I actually finish what I buy so has anyone else had a theme-first purchase totally backfire?

Oh man, which space opera was it that burned you so bad? I gotta know so I can steer clear!

The whole "bigger is better" trap. Same thing happens in pickup trucks now.

Six rounds of a boring space opera sounds like a painful way to learn a lesson, @ivanl76. I once bought a game about farming in a post apocalyptic world because the box had a cute cow on it, turns out the "cow" was just a metaphor for radiation poisoning. Now I check a playthrough video before I even open the shrink wrap, unless it's Gloomhaven, then I just let the hype carry me.
