Tried that board game cafe in Austin and got way more than I bargained for

Ngl I went to this spot called Game Republic last Saturday just expecting to grab a coffee and play a round of Wingspan solo. Ended up getting roped into a 4 hour game of Root with three strangers who all knew each other. I thought I'd be awkward but they walked me through every rule without being pushy about it. Honestly learned more about player negotiation in those 4 hours than I did from a dozen YouTube tutorials. The barista even brought over a bonus snack plate when she saw us getting into a heated debate about the woodland alliance. Has anyone else found that playing with a random group teaches you stuff you miss when you stick to your usual crew?

Playing with randoms strips away the polite house rules you didn't even realize you were following (which are usually just crutches for your friends). It forces you to actually learn the game's real edge cases.

Does that mean you think playing with friends is basically just practicing bad habits that you don't even know you have? I've had that thought too, especially when a random shows up and punishes some stupid little thing I've been doing for years that nobody ever called me out on. But then I wonder, is that actually making you better at the game, or is it just making you spaz out about tiny details that only come up against other strangers? Like, are those edge cases really helping you win more, or are they just making you play more paranoid and less fun? I'm not convinced it's a straight upgrade over just having a good time with your buddies, even if it does teach you a thing or two.
