TIL that foam core inserts for board games are actually super easy to make
I used to think custom inserts were a waste of time and money since boxes already have that plastic tray. But after my copy of Wingspan kept getting pieces mixed up during transport, I grabbed a $8 foam core board and a utility knife. Measured out the compartments in about 20 minutes, glued it up, and now everything stays perfectly sorted. Has anyone else tried making their own inserts or do you stick with the stock plastic?

20 minutes and $8 sounds like a lot of hassle for a game you probably play like twice a year.

maxb46 said "probably play like twice a year" but honestly that's when these inserts save you. The time you lose digging through mixed up pieces every time you actually pull the game out adds up way faster than 20 minutes of cutting. I've made inserts for about a half dozen games now and it takes me maybe 15 minutes once you get the rhythm down. Plus the cheap foam core lasts forever, I've had my first one for years with no issues.
